Club Roster

Hi Everyone!

I recently got this email:

"In order students to receive their Recognition Award, we are requiring every club/organization to submit their most current Active Membership Roster. This needs to be submitted electronically by Monday, November 17, 2008 by 12pm. If we do not receive your roster by this time, any student that listed your organization in the Recognition Award Packet will not receive credit and will lose their Award. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you."

If you can, send me your name, year and email address so I can create a new roster. I know a few of you came up to me about these awards, and I'd hate for you to not get them because you're not on the list.

If you know people who aren't on facebook or in the group on facebook or don't read the blog, please tell them to shoot me an email (nicolerodriguez@mail.adelphi.edu or animeclub@adelphi.edu) with their information.

Thanks!

Halloween!

I'll probably go over this at the meeting, but just in case some of you don't make it, I'll put it up here in the blog.

Halloween is Friday, and for those of you who are new to Adelphi, the residents of Garden City are pretty used to Adelphi kids running around and trick or treating! So don't lament, you're not too old for some free candy—just make sure to wear a costume!

So on Friday, I think it would be good to meet at Post Hall, perhaps around 6:00 p.m. And if a lot of people wish to meet at another time, I'll change it. So everyone can meet there and head out to go trick or treating :)

I don't know if I'll come (I might be assigned arduous task of candy distribution at my house), but I'm positive that some of the other officers are going to go, so look out for them!

Don't forget that Adelphi is having its own Halloween bash on Thursday!

I hope everyone has a fun—and safe—Halloween :)

ADV Films to Distribute Anime for Sentai Filmworks

ADV has finally found a new licensing partner: Sentai Filmworks.

ADV films, the largest anime company in North America, had recently been going through some tough times when their partnership with Sojitz, a Japanese licensing company, had ended. Since then, ADV has dropped several of its titles, such as Gurren Lagann and Welcome to the NHK! and handed them over to other companies such as Bandai and FUNimation.

Hopefully this new partnership will mark an end to the struggle they had been going through.

This news also reveals that ADV will be distributing the anime adaptation of the popular visual novel Clannad. Clannad is based on a game by Key, the creators of other famous visual-novels-made-into-anime such as Kanon and Air. The series was animated by Kyoto Animation, famous for their work in The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and Lucky Star.

Through this partnership, ADV also acquired the rights to Koharu Biyori, Mahoromatic, Mahoromatic: Something More Beautiful, Tsukihime, Pet Shop of Horrors, and Jewel BEM Hunter Lime.

Get out there and vote!

I know this has nothing to do with Anime club, but it does pertain to just about all of us. :)

The deadline to register to vote in NY is Friday. Meaning, you have to have your paperwork postmarked by that date and it has to be received by October 15.

I urge everyone who is of voting age (you need to be 18 by election day I believe) to register to vote. College students or people of college age historically turn out in very low numbers on election day, which doesn't give the politicians an incentive to listen to us. The best way to make sure that we have our voices heard is to get as many people to vote as possible! I don't care who you vote for, just vote.

Adelphi's made the process simple. V.O.T.E.R. is out in full force, stalking people out by the library (I can't recall how many times I've told them that I've been registered for two years XD), so you can ask them for help. You can also check out the site that Adelphi's set up over here that has helpful links for registering in every state. They're also willing to answer any questions you might have about the voting process..which might be helpful as many of you are probably voting for the first time. V.O.T.E.R. is also holding informative panels on the candidates' views, so I encourage you to check those out if you're not too sure of who you want to vote for.

I know some may feel that one voice doesn't make a difference, but people fail to realize that it's not about whether or not your vote gets canceled out or your state is already given to a particular candidate, it's about making sure that the politicians know we're here. :) They cater to what people want based on the votes they can get. If college students suddenly vote a lot, then maybe they'll start wondering what they can do about the ever-increasing cost of tuition..

Anyway, we DO have a meeting on November 4, and I was contemplating on canceling it, but I think one of the best ways to unwind will be to step away from politics for a while and watch some anime (anyone want to crash the election party after our meeting? I'm up for staying up all night to find out who wins!). Feel free to miss out on this meeting if you're going to vote, I much rather you went and do that. I believe the polls are open INSANELY early, so I'll probably be out voting at 6:30 in the morning when they open :)

Bandai Announcements

Bandai had some exciting new announcements at this year's New York Anime Festival. Here's the rundown:

Akira - The hit anime film Akira will be released on Blu-Ray, by Bandai. The dub track used will be the most recently used one.
Gurren Lagann - Bandai will be releasing the manga for the hit sci-fi/mecha anime series, Gurren Lagann. Currently there are two volumes of the manga available in Japan.
Sola & True Tears - Sola and True Tears will be released in box sets under Bandai's Anime Legends label.

Bandai also did a re-cap of older announcements, which included:

Lucky Star - Will continue to be released in Limited & Standard Editions. Limited Edition boxes come with a shirt and a character CD.
Rocket Girls - A sci-fi series about a girl who blasts off into space in search of her father. Will be released Sub-Only.
Hayate the Combat Butler - The hilarious parody anime series about a boy who finds himself working as a butler for a wealthy girl living in a huge mansion to pay off a debt owed to her. This anime makes fun of just about every other anime out there, and then some!
Gundam 00 - Will be released by Bandai, coming soon.
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time - A very popular anime film about Makoto, a high-school girl who discovers the secrets of rewriting the past through time travel, but fails to realize the consequences. This may sound like a typical time-travel story, but it's not. The events that unfold create a very dramatic and beautiful experience. Don't pass this one up.
Code Geass R2 -Will be aired on Adult Swim starting this October.

Haruhi Suzumiya Poster Appears In Canadian Tylenol Ad

A new Tylenol commercial in Canada shows a short clip where you can see a Haruhi Suzumiya poster in the background for a few seconds. Pretty awesome. Wonder if someone slipped that in there on purpose.

New CSI Policies

Hi Everyone!

There are a few new CSI (Center for Student Involvement) policies which greatly effect the club. I will have a member pointing this out to everyone at our meeting tomorrow (unfortunately I will not be able to attend), but I figure that having these up on our blog won't hurt.

1) Rules
CSI is really cracking down on certain things. We NEED to have 15 members or the club WILL be cut. I've found a couple of new ways to advertise, unfortunately I can't have them up in time for our second meeting, but perhaps I can have them up in time for the third. This includes posters. With the new polices in effect, it's simply impossible for me to get them up today. Hopefully with the new advertising efforts, we will gain members. That doesn't mean current members can't help out. Recruit! Keep the club alive.

2) Events
All clubs are REQUIRED to hold 3 events per semester (2 regular, 1 community service). My officers and I have already come up with events that the club can hold, and I will try to get in contact with other small clubs so we can collaborate on events and work together. However, I cannot plan events for the club on my own—I simply don't have the time. All members have to help with the event-planning process. If you have any ideas, please come to me, comment on this post, or email me. Events do not have to be big, so please come to me with any ideas you might have!

3) Club email
Pretty soon the club will have it's own email address. It will be AnimeClub@adelphi.edu, right now I can't access it, but I should be able to soon.

4) Budget
All clubs are receiving funds now. Do you have any ideas on what the anime club can use its budget on? Please contact me :)

I understand this may be frustrating to long-time members as the club has usually done its own thing in the past. Unfortunately we will not be able to continue doing that, so some things are going to have to change. I really need the members' cooperation on this one, and hopefully we can have a great year together in the process.

Do As Infinity Returns

First blog post! Yay! And some great news, at that.

Do As Infinity, the J-Pop/Rock band famous for performing the theme songs Fukai Mori (Deep Forest) and Shinjitsu no Uta (Song of Truth) from the hit anime series Inu Yasha, has announced that after nearly a 2-year breakup, they will be getting back together.

On September 29, 2008, they will officially resume activities. For the time being, the band plans to focus on live performances, but will begin to release new material this spring.

Do As Infinity's members consist of vocalist Tomiko Van, guitarist Ryo Owatari, and composer Dai Nagao. They are also famous for their song Tōku Made, which is the theme song used in Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust.

Welcome!

I'd like to welcome everyone to the start of a brand new semester of Anime Club! There's a few announcements I'd like to make:

  • Posters should be up either this week or Monday. I'm aiming for Monday as right now it's the end of the week and a lot of commuters won't be around on Friday. Hopefully a lot of people will see the posters on Monday.

  • If you know people who like anime, be sure to recruit them!

  • If you have anime you would like to watch, just shoot me an email or send me a message on facebook. If I can't find someone with the DVD, I'll let you know. Likewise, if YOU have a DVD you want to watch, let me know and bring it to a club meeting!

  • If you want to be a blog writer and keep everyone up to date on the newest anime news, then get in contact with me.

  • If you have any suggestions or ideas, don't be shy! We want anime club to be awesome, so your idea might help

Here's to an awesome semester!
